The Irish Setter is an intelligent, easily trainable dog. Consistent, firm leadership— without physical force or anger— is needed. Otherwise, these dogs will certainly use you to their advantage. Training is necessary to keep them from becoming bored, as they may have attention deficit disorder. Keep them entertained, and use food rewards, play, and praises— avoid repetition. Switch activities/rewards, and use fair corrections.
Crate training is necessary. These curious pups examine everything with their mouths, and a crate keeps your pup and stuff safe even when you aren't around.
Housetraining them is easy, especially with a crate and consistent schedules. It may take some time, as Irish Setters may not control their bladders until they're at least four months old. Before leaving for too long, be sure that there will be someone with your dog to accompany him when he needs to pee.
