What You Need To Know About Cracked Hooves In Horses

Updated: Aug 15, 2022

Horses are like humans too. They possess certain characteristics that you have. Just like having nails — they have something similar called hoof walls.

As you may observe, the hoof walls of your horses have cracks or chips. Do not panic. These walls consist of keratin that protects the sensitive part of the hooves of your horses from outside elements, including infection, moisture, and hard surfaces.

These cracks or chips are generally small and do not need treatment. But, keep in mind that they may be due to extreme or less exposure to moisture or a trivial injury.

The cracks or chips in hooks have different types.

  • Grass crack - This crack begins close to the ground. It does not come with pain and does not cause your horses to feel timid or lame.

  • Coronary band / Sand crack - This crack is due to a traumatic injury or too much stress at the coronary band of your horse. This crack type may cause your horses to feel incapacitated.

  • Horizontal crack - This crack type occurs due to an abscess at the coronary band, producing a space between the hoof walls. The crack is benign.

Considering the condition of the cracks, your vet clinic Westminster, MD may have to wire them together, patch, or cut out the cracks.
