Hairballs In Cats

Cat hairball is almost inevitable among cats regardless of the breed. While this condition is more prevalent among cats with long hair, even the short-haired ones are not exempt from this predicament.

So you may be wondering, what exactly is a hairball and what causes this?

As you may already know, cats are fond of grooming themselves and they do this by licking their fur. A cat's tongue consists of tiny follicles in which strands of hair get stuck. As these hair strands accumulate, it forms lumps of hair, hairballs which the cat eventually spits out, or worse, they ingest.

Unfortunately, cats are unable to vomit all the hairballs and some of them get caught in a cat's throat or windpipe. This can lead to choking and breathing difficulties which, if not attended to right away, can be fatal to a cat.

Frequent hairball episodes should require a visit to your pet clinic Aurora, CO so your cat can be examined.
