Fox Terriers have a coat so dense that you can't see their skin by parting the coat. These stuff hairs cover a short, soft, and fine undercoat. The Smooth-coated variety only requires occasional brushing (use firm-bristled brushes); bathing is done only when necessary. Although the Wire-haired doesn't shed a lot, regular brushing is essential to keep the coat odor-free and clean.
Wire-haired should be hand-stripped (plucking instead of cutting the hair) to achieve the variety's signature texture. Many Wire Fox Terrier owners prefer leaving this job to the groomer, but you can also opt to learn and do it on your own. Another option is to have the coat clipped. But before deciding to stick to clipping, keep in mind that this method alters the hair's wiry texture. With that, your dog's hair becomes soft, and his coat's color may seem pale.
Any problem affecting your pet's skin and/or hair coat should require a visit to your pet clinic Columbia, MD.
