Are Dog Foods Suitable for Cats?

There are a lot of reasons why pet foods are categorized—cat foods are for cats, and dog foods are for dogs. And here's why you shouldn't feed your pet cat with dog food:

  • A lot of dog foods do not have the vitamins and nutrients that cats' bodies need daily. Cats need vitamin A, but their bodies cannot convert beta-carotene into this vitamin, and most dog products don't contain it either.

  • Cats also need taurine in their daily diet. They do not obtain it naturally from the food they consume, unlike dogs. This essential protein is missing from dog foods. With insufficient taurine or feeding your cat with dog food every day, it may develop hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (a type of heart disease).

  • Dog food also lacks arachidonic acid. This nutrition is also important for cats, as their bodies require protein. Although there are some dog foods with more protein, these are not suitable for cats. Low protein or improper food may cause negative health problems for cats.

Do consult your vet clinic Columbia, MD before making any changes to your pet's diet.
